JOHN KNOWLES, of Irish-American heritage, has been playing Irish music for many years, and began studying Scottish music while living in Scotland. John plays mandolin, guitar, cittern, concertina, and whistle in addition to the fiddle. He has played all over Ireland and Scotland and at countless venues in the United States. He and Sharon released their first recording, Ferry Cottage, in 2000. They founded the band Fynesound and released more albums since. John has won fiddling competitions in the U.S. and Scotland. He is also a member of the Irish-American group, Kilshanny.
SHARON KNOWLES emigrated from Scotland to the US in 1997. She quickly became a sought-after teacher of the Scottish harp, and is a popular performer and workshop leader from North Carolina to Alaska. She frequently performs for Embassy functions and has worked alongside many well-known musicians, including William Jackson and Grainne Hambly. She has taught and performed at many music schools in the United States, including the Ohio Scottish Arts School, Common Ground on the Hill and all the major harp festivals. In addition to Fynesound and Jug of Punch, Sharon plays with Sue Richards in the Celtic harp duo HEN. She is featured on several other recordings by Fynesound and HEN, and is currently working on a solo album, The Raven’s Wing . She has played her harp for large theater productions and organizes festivals and shows for both adults and children.
